Blood tests for hair loss in Australia
Blood tests are sometimes part of a hair-loss assessment in Australia when a doctor considers them relevant to your history and examination. Iron status and thyroid function are examples a doctor may consider; tests are not needed for every person. The doctor orders and interprets tests, and this site does not sell tests or receive results.
Why might a doctor suggest blood tests?
A doctor may use tests to investigate a possible contributing health factor rather than assuming the cause from the appearance of your hair alone. The timing of shedding, recent illness, eating patterns and other health changes can guide the discussion. The doctor decides which questions, if any, require investigation.
Hair loss with fatigue or weight loss should be discussed with your GP so your wider health can be considered. A contact enquiry is not a test request or a diagnosis.
Could iron status be relevant?
A doctor may consider iron-related testing in some circumstances, depending on the clinical history. Hair changes alone do not establish an iron issue. Results need interpretation alongside the examination and other findings; do not assign yourself a cause from a single value.
Could thyroid function be relevant?
Thyroid function is another factor a doctor may consider for some forms of thinning or shedding. Testing is an individual clinical decision. This site does not offer test panels or sell testing services. Ask the doctor what a proposed test is intended to clarify and how the result would affect the next discussion.
Does everyone need the same tests?
No. The doctor chooses investigations based on the assessment, and may decide that no blood tests are indicated. A scalp examination, a discussion of possible causes or a dermatologist referral may be more relevant. Iron status and thyroid function are general examples, not a recommended panel. No test list on a website can determine what is appropriate for you.
Who orders tests and explains results?
The doctor orders any tests that are clinically appropriate. The clinic or testing provider explains where testing takes place, how results reach the doctor and how follow-up is arranged. Hair Doctor Match does not order tests, take samples, collect results or interpret them.
Ask when and how you will discuss results and who to contact with questions. A test result on its own is not a complete hair-loss assessment. Keep test results and clinical information in the doctor’s own process, not in this site’s contact form.
What should I ask about separate costs?
$99 doctor consult — the fee for a consultation with a registered doctor only. Any treatment, tests or medicines are separate and decided by the doctor. Medicare rebates may not apply.
Testing and a later results discussion may have separate fees. Ask the clinic and testing provider about charges and Medicare eligibility before agreeing; rebates may not apply. Your own GP is another pathway for assessment and testing discussions.
